As a mum of 2 I know all to well the challenges faced in pregnancy and motherhood. It is one of the most incredible and special moments in your life when you get that positive test result but it also brings a wave of anxiety along with it. It is a life changing event filled with lots of amazing moments and hurdles. When they say it takes a village...it definitely does! I have worked in the beauty industry for 20 years and had my own beauty salon for 16 years. My passion has always been to make people feel good about themselves and I have always been an ear to listen to their problems. After using Hypnobirthing in my first birth it sparked a new passion, to help parents to be navigate the maternity system and to nurture them in their steps into parenthood...and boy do I love it! I trained in Hypnobirthing with Abby at Love your Birth in 2021 and now also volunteer as part of the Maternity Voice Panel in NHS Lothian to help improve the maternity services in our area. I also teach baby massage, which I absolutely love, I used baby classes as a way to meet new friends and really enjoyed the baby massage for my 2 girls as they suffered with colic and reflux and my classes are a place to do exactly that!

I woke up on the morning of Saturday 12th May and felt reduced movement so I called the labour and birth suite and they wanted me in to be observed and checked. I was 41 weeks pregnant at this point and had a sweep done the day before so I went in and they did lots of checks and within 5 minutes Macey was cart wheeling in my tummy....typical! However what I did discover was that I was having contractions and they thought I was in early labour. Boy did that put a spring in my step! We went home and went a lovely nature walk, I bounced for hours on my birthing ball, I ate and drank to keep my energy up and I relaxed with my relaxation scripts to keep me in the zone.My mum and dad visited and we chatted about how our little bundle of joy was soon going to be with us and I cherish those memories right to this day. I went to bed that night and literally was in bed for about 15 minutes when my waters broke. I called the labour suite and told them how often my contractions were and that my waters had went and they asked me to come in. I was so relaxed and excited I bounced into the hospital and even the midwife remarked on how calm I was. I allowed for them to check to see how far into labour I was and found out I was 4cm. The midwife suggested I went home and called once I felt the surges were closer together. So we got home and I sent my husband to bed and my mum sat with me downstairs. I tried to rest a bit but I found walking and moving about really helped my comfort levels. Within an hour my surges were alot more powerful and I was really in my relaxation zone and almost shutting the outside world out. The adrenaline started to make me feel a bit sick and the only comfortable place I could be was sitting on the toilet. My surges got closer together and by 2am we were back on the phone to the labour suite to say I think I needed to come in. This time I didnt bounce into the hospital. I was swaying, focused on my breathing, leaning on my husband through the contractions and picturing what my baby would look like . I allowed them to check me again and I was 6cm dilated. By this point I was having alot of lower back and pelvic discomfort so I decided I wanted an epidural to help me alongside my hypnobirthing. I had the epidural and it really helped as Macey was back to back so I had alot of pressure in my lower back. Unfortunately my temperture spiked and Maceys heart rate dipped so I was being observed closely. It was suggested I have a c-section. This is the one thing I wasnt keen to have so I asked my questions using BRAIN technique learnt in hypnobirthing and I said I wanted to be checked again to see how dilated I was incase I was 10cm and low and behold I was....it was time to deliver my baby. I was super excited that the time had finally come and I used my birth breathing techniques however during this time Maceys heart rate dropped again and my temperature was still rising so again we relooked at the ideas of an assisted delivery or csection and this time I weighed the decision up using my BRAIN techniques and decided it was for the best. I used my breathing tools to keep me calm during the c section and the team dealing with me made me feel at ease. Macey was born and the rush of love for her came over me! Unfortunately after I was stitched up my temperature spiked again so I was taken to a room for very close observations and given antibiotics.
Now you may have read this and thought wow thats alot to go through. I look back at my journey as an incredible one and a really positive one. If I hadn't used my hypnobirthing toolkit or hadn't learnt all about how my body births and birth choices it I would have had totally different feelings towards it.
When I fell pregnant with Sofia I instantly wanted to try for a vaginal delivery and one of my main reasons was because I felt my body could do it. However as I progressed through my pregnancy and faced a few hurdles with morning sickness, being discriminated against by the doctors for a high BMI which due to my knowledge I was able to put them right as its my body and my baby. I weighed up every decision with the pros and cons and eventually sat down with a obstetritian. Once she gave me all the facts about vaginal deliverys after section I went away and thought about what I really wanted for myself, baby and also recovery and timing wise with having Macey around too. I decided that actually a planned csection would be best. So we got it all arranged and I wrote a birth plan on all that I wanted such as a quiet room, baby to be lifted out as gentle as possible, delayed cord clamping and for baby to be doing skin to skin as quickly as possible. On the Monday morning 30th of May we went down calmly to the hospital. I took my last bump pictures, listened to my hypnobirthing scripts, sat and chatted to the midwife and my husband about how amazing our baby was about to arrive. I walked along to theatre with the midwife and she got me sitting prepped for the spinal block. I got introduced to the whole team doing the operation and instantly felt like I just needed to get in my birthing zone. I started focusing on my breathing and visualising my baby about to be born while I got my spinal block and my midwife was amazing as she just had her hand of my shoulder as said nothing as she knew I was in the zone. Once prepped it was surgery time and honestly I was so excited! It wasnt long before I heard Sofias first cry and got a glimpse of her as they lowered the screen for me to see. The staff kept chatting to me while Stuart went to see her weight and get her cord cut and before I knew it she was in my arms. The most perfect little bundle and we enjoyed some time skin to skin in the recovery room and then the best tea and toast back in the room. Honestly it was so calm, beautiful and exactly how I wanted it to be!
